A driving license is an important official document that allows you to drive your vehicle legally while also functioning as a form of identity proof. This said, in Canada, your Canadian driver’s license is good for one to five years, depending on several factors, including your class of license, medical status, and age. After that, it must be renewed, which can be done a couple of ways.

We used to have to personally go into the license registry and go through the process to renew our driver’s license, which could be tedious and time-consuming. But thankfully, nowadays, with technological advances, driver’s license renewals can be done online without hassle.

However, it should be noted that the online site can only be used if your driver’s license is not expired and you renew your driver’s license without changes. If you require any changes to your driver’s license, for example, a name or address change, you must apply for the renewal in person at a registry agent’s office.

Another thing to remember is that when you renew your license online or do any online service, you need to have a My Alberta Digital ID (MADI) account. This free account lets you prove who you are online without paper documents or face-to-face visits. Once you have your MADI account set up, you’ll be able to do a range of online services such as requesting driver’s abstracts, registration duplicates, Vehicle Information Reports (VIR), In-Transit permits, and the newly added driver’s licenses renewal services.

Create a MADI account

A common problem we see is people not having a MADI account set up. Additionally, you will run into some issues with certain online services if there are any fines on the account.

In case you are unsuccessful in doing it online, you can always bring your documents in personally, and we will see to it that you are compliant with new policies and will be able to be done online next time.

If you need a reminder for when your license is about to expire, you can sign up for a reminder at https://reminders.e-registry.ca/. Please be sure to select CHAPARRAL REGISTRY AND INSURANCE as your registry office.
